The PAN (Permanent Account Number) card is an important document for conducting even the most simplest of financial transactions like opening a savings bank account or applying for a debit/credit card. 

It is a 10-digit alphanumeric identity allotted by the income tax department to an individual, company, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) or any other person. 

Earlier, to apply for PAN, an individual had to physically fill up forms specified by the income tax department (i.e., form 49A for resident individuals) and provide supporting documents for proof of identity, address, and date of birth.

Here Are Few Things To Remember in Mind Before Apply For Your PAN Card : 



  • While filling in your application, you should fill your surname before your first name. However, on the PAN card, your name will appear in the sequence of 'First name Surname'. 
  • There is a paperless facility called e-KYC and e-sign where your Aadhaar details will be used. You don't have to upload images such as photo, signature or other supporting documents. Your Aadhaar photograph will appear in your PAN if you use the e-KYC and e-sign facility. 
  • There is a second method which is a standalone e-sign facility where you are required to upload your photograph, signature (in black ink) and specified supporting documents in a prescribed format, unlike in the e-KYC and e-Sign option. 
  • However, for minor applicants and cases where a representative assessee is appointed, then the e-KYC and e-sign facility is not allowed. 
  • You should only use the e-Sign or e-KYC methods if your mobile/email is linked with Aadhaar as you will be required to undergo the Aadhaar authentication process.

Step 1 : Submit the PAN card application Form 49A available on the NSDL Website.

Step 2 : Fill all the details in the form. Read the detailed instructions  before furnishing the details in the form. 



Step 3:  Mode of Payment :
The charges for applying for PAN is Rs. 107 (including service tax) for Indian communication address and Rs. 994 (including service tax) for foreign communication address. Payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking. On successful payment, acknowledgement will be displayed. Save this acknowledgement number.



Step 4 : Documents to be sent to NSDL
Once the application and payment is accepted, the applicant is required to send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL.Documents include one proof of identity, one proof of address and one proof of date of birth. How to make Changes/corrections in PAN

If you want to make changes in the existing PAN such as change in name , date of birth etc, you can apply for it online. The procedure is almost the same as you apply for new PAN except in case of corrections in PAN,you also need to submit the documents to support th change required in PAN.      


Here are the steps to make changes in PAN:



Step 1:  Fill the online application form for making changes/corrections in PAN on the NSDL website.



Step 2: Read The full instructions carefully for filling the form for make changes in PAN.

Step 3 : The charges for making changes in PAN is also Rs. 107 (including service tax) for Indian communication address and Rs. 994 (including service tax) for foreign communication address. Payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking. On successful payment, acknowledgement will be displayed. Save and print this this acknowledgement number.

Step 3: Documents to be sent to NSDL

Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL.Documents sent should support the changes applied for in PAN for e.g. Request for change in applicant’s or father’s name will have to be supported with such proof that will contain proof of change of name from the old to the new in addition to the proof of identity. The documents that shall be accepted as proof in this case are:
  • For married ladies – change of name on account of marriage – marriage certificate, marriage invitation card, publication of ‘name-change’ in gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change, copy of passport showing husband’s name.
  • For individual applicants other than married ladies – publication of    `name-change’ in gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change.
  • For companies – ROC’s certificate for name change.
  • For partnership firms – revised Partnership Deed
  • For other categories which are registered organisations (AOP/Trust/BOI/AJP, etc.) – the revised registration/deed/agreement.
